He followed his father to AL when he came of age. He was apprenticed to Thomas McPhail, to learn the cooper trade, and later stayed with his uncle Big John Geddie. In 1869 they went overland in covered wagons to Van Zandt Co., TX, near Owlet Green. He settled on a farm next to his first cousin by the same name, a son of Big John.2

James Alexander Geddie served between 1846 and 1848 from AL in the Mexican War, Co. A, Coffey's Alabama Militia Inf.3
