Joseph E. Grant was born on 26 Aug 1792 in SC.1,2,3

Joseph Grant, a Revolutionary War veteran, was a good candidate for the father of Joseph E. Grant, because he was old enough to be the father, he lived in Hancock Co., GA where Joseph E. enlisted in the War of 1812, he had a son named Joseph who was of a similar age to Joseph E., and Hancock Co. is adjacent to Putnam Co., where Joseph E. married Martha Burkhalter.

This sounds very good, except for the fact that this candidate’s son, Joseph, died in 1815.

There were other Grants in counties adjacent to Hancock Co. (Putnam, Greene, Baldwin, Warren, Taliaferro), but none of these Grants were old enough to be Joseph E.’s father.

Joseph E. Grant began military service on 10 Sep 1814 in Hancock Co., GA, in the War of 1812, as a Private in Capt. S. Butts' Company, GA Militia.4,5,6 His military service ended on 3 Mar 1815 in Waynesboro, Burke Co., GA, after about 5 months and 20 days.7

Joseph E. Grant was on the 1820 taxlist in Putnam Co., GA.12

Joseph E. Grant was a successful drawer in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery. He was living in Monroe Co., GA. He drew land in Lee Co., Number 232, District 3.13 He was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1830 in Monroe Co., GA.14

Joseph E. Grant was on the 1834 taxlist in Monroe Co., GA. He was on the taxlist intermittantly until 1869.15

Joseph E. Grant was enumerated as Head of Household in the censuses of 1840 in Monroe Co., GA,16 and of 1850 in Monroe Co., GA, with others in the household: Martha Burkhalter, Charles Whitfield Grant, Sarah (Sally) Grant, Emily Grant, Thomas Jefferson Grant and Richard Clinton Grant (his wife, 3 sons, and 2 daughters.)17

Joseph E. Grant was awarded land, as follows: 80 acres in Randolph Co., AL - the N½ of the NW¼ of Section 31, Township 18S, Range 10E. This was for his service in the War of 1812.18 Joseph E. Grant was awarded land, as follows: 80 acres in Cerro Gordo Co., Iowa- the W½ of the SE¼ of Section 25, Township 94N, Range 21W. This was also for his service in the War of 1812. He assigned this land in Iowa to George E. Richardson.19

He was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1860 in Monroe Co., GA, with others in the household: Martha Burkhalter and Thomas Jefferson Grant (his wife and son.)20 Joseph E. Grant signed the Qualified Voters list on 8 Jul 1867 in Monroe Co., GA.21

Joseph E. Grant left a will dated 27 Apr 1869 in Monroe Co., GA. Witnesses: William J. Proctor, his grandson.22
