William James McPhail left a will dated 7 Nov 1896 in Cumberland Co., NC. Heirs: Margaret Elizabeth Geddie, his wife, plus his granddaughter, Mary Jane McPhail. Heir and Executor: Hugh A. McPhail, his son.⁸

William James McPhail died on 13 Dec 1896 at age 68. He was buried in John McPhail Family Cemetery, Eastover, Cumberland Co., NC.⁹ His estate was probated on 2 Jan 1897 in Cumberland Co., NC.⁸

     Sally Geddie was the daughter of James Daniel Geddie I and Isabella McPhail.

     Elizabeth Geddie was born on 24 Sep 1809 in NC.² She was the daughter of James Daniel Geddie I and Isabella McPhail.

Elizabeth Geddie married Alexander McKeithan on 16 Apr 1832 in Cumberland Co., NC.³ Elizabeth Geddie was enumerated in the census of 1850 in Cumberland Co., NC, in the household of Alexander McKeithan.² Elizabeth Geddie was enumerated in the census of 1860 in Cumberland Co., NC, in the household of Alexander McKeithan.⁴



Note: According to the tombstone in MacPherson Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Elizabeth, who was married to Alexander McKethan, died 26 Feb 1832. His marriage record shows him marrying Elizabeth Geddie 16 Apr 1832. Geddie-McPhail says Elizabeth Geddie was the d/o James Daniel Geddie and Isabella McPhail. On the Cumberland Co. GenWeb site, there is info that says she was the d/o John "Big John" Geddie. The tombstone says the w/o Alexander was b. 1809, which fits with the 1850 & 1860 censuses. So how likely is it that Alexander married some Elizabeth b. 1809, d. 1832, then married Elizabeth Geddie in 1832, also b. 1809, and in the 1850 & 1860 censuses. Elizabeth Geddie was buried in MacPherson Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC.⁵

     Alexander McKeithan was born on 22 Oct 1801 in NC.^2,3

Alexander McKeithan married Elizabeth Geddie, daughter of James Daniel Geddie I and Isabella McPhail, on 16 Apr 1832 in Cumberland Co., NC.⁴ Alexander McKeithan was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1850 in Cumberland Co., NC, with others in the household: Elizabeth Geddie.³ Alexander McKeithan was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1860 in Cumberland Co., NC, with others in the household: Elizabeth Geddie.⁵

Alexander McKeithan died on 14 Dec 1876 at age 75.² He was buried in MacPherson Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Fayetteville, Cumberland Co., NC.²

     Dougald McPhail Sr. was born on 20 May 1761 in Scotland.¹ He was the son of father McPhail.

Dougald McPhail Sr. married Isabella Murphy, daughter of John Murphy and Isabella Porter.¹ Dougald McPhail Sr. emigrated from Scotland in 1772 to North Carolina, near Fayetteville.¹ He was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1810 in Cumberland Co., NC.

Dougald McPhail Sr. died on 1 Jul 1839 in Cumberland Co., NC, at age 78. He was buried in John McPhail Family Cemetery, Eastover, Cumberland Co., NC.²

     This 'father' provides a place to group siblings whose father is unknown to me.

     Daniel McPhail was the son of father McPhail. Daniel McPhail emigrated from Scotland in 1772 to North Carolina, near Fayetteville.¹

     Isabella Murphy was born on 27 Apr 1771.¹

Isabella Murphy married Dougald McPhail Sr., son of father McPhail.¹ Isabella Murphy was the daughter of John Murphy and Isabella Porter.

Isabella Murphy died on 9 Nov 1846 in Cumberland Co., NC, at age 75.¹ She was buried in John McPhail Family Cemetery, Eastover, Cumberland Co., NC.²

     Thomas McPhail was born on 1 Apr 1793 in NC.^2,3 He was the son of Dougald McPhail Sr. and Isabella Murphy.

Thomas McPhail married Margaret McNeill on 1 Apr 1818 in Cumberland Co., NC.^4,5 Thomas McPhail was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1850 in Cumberland Co., NC, with others in the household: Margaret McNeill, Isabella McPhail, Thomas Robert McPhail, Daniel McNeill McPhail, Mary Margaret McPhail, Dougald McPhail, Hector N. McPhail and John A. McPhail (his wife and 7 children.)²

Thomas McPhail and Margaret moved to TX circa 1853. They crossed the Mississippi River on 25 Dec 1852.⁶

Thomas McPhail was widowed on 10 Jun 1853 in Cherokee Co., TX.⁶ He was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1860 in Van Zandt Co., TX, with others in the household: Hector N. McPhail, John A. McPhail, Isabella McPhail and Thomas Robert McPhail (three of his children.)⁷ Thomas McPhail was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1870 in Van Zandt Co., TX, with others in the household: Isabella McPhail, Hector N. McPhail and Margaret Ann Rosenbaum (two of his children and his granddaughter.)⁸

Thomas McPhail died on 6 May 1875 at age 82.³ He was buried in Garden Valley Cemetery, Garden Valley, Smith Co., TX.³
