Simon S. Barlow1

M, #840, b. 4 Mar 1854, d. 24 Nov 1935
Barlow, Simon S. and his grandson, Vernon Halliday
Simon S. Barlow was enumerated in the census of 1850 in Butts Co., GA, in the household of James Barlow (his father.)2 Simon S. Barlow was born on 4 Mar 1854 in Butts Co., GA.3,4 He was the son of James Barlow and Ellen (Nellie) Jones.

In the will of Richard Barlow, dated 28 Dec 1859 in Butts Co., GA, Simon S. Barlow, his grandson, the son of James, was named as an heir.5

Simon S. Barlow was enumerated in the censuses of 1860 in Butts Co., GA, in the household of Ellen (Nellie) Jones (his mother),6 and of 1870 in Stewart Co., GA, in the household of Eldridge Barlow (his uncle.)7

Simon S. Barlow married Lola Florilla Amanda Williamson, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Williamson and Eliza Ann Ingram, on 14 Dec 1873 in Stewart Co., GA.8,9 Simon was a miller (1880) and farmer.10,9,11,12

Simon S. Barlow was enumerated as Head of Household in the censuses of 1880 in Stewart Co., GA, with others in the household: Lola Florilla Amanda Williamson, William E. Barlow, Arthur Wellsley Barlow, Mary Anna Williamson and Ellen (Nellie) Jones (his wife, 2 sons, sister-in-law, and mother),10 of 1900 in Stewart Co., GA, with others in the household: Lola Florilla Amanda Williamson, William E. Barlow, Arthur Wellsley Barlow, Mattie Blanch Barlow, George Milton Barlow, Lubie Eugene Barlow Sr., Dona A. Barlow, Lola A. Barlow, Howard Sanders Barlow, Joseph A. Barlow and Nancy P. Barlow, Howard Sanders Barlow, Joseph A. Barlow and Nancy P. Barlow (his wife, 3 daughters, and 2 sons.)11

Simon S. Barlow died on 24 Nov 1935 in Lumpkin, Stewart Co., GA, at age 81; the informant of the death was W. T. Halliday, his son-in-law.3,17 Simon S. Barlow was buried on 25 Nov 1935 in County Line Cemetery, Lumpkin, Stewart Co., GA.18,4,3

Simon is definitely the child of James Barlow and Nellie Jones. He is mentioned in Richard Barlow's will as a son of his son, James, and Nellie. Nellie was living with our Simon in the US1880 census. Simon's death certificate says his mother was Nellie Jones, as reported by W. T. Haliday, presumably his son-in-law, William Thomas Halliday.

Richard's will also mentions Simon's uncle, Eldridge, with whom Simon is living in US1870, along with Lola Williams(on), his future wife. She is also found with her father and stepmother in Butts Co. in 1870. (Simon is the nephew of Eldridge and Lola is the niece of Winnie, Eldridge's wife.)

The question still remains as to whether the Simon who was 1 year old in the US1850 census could be our Simon, who was probably born in 1854.
