Dawson Baptist Church was formed about 1840; the Rev. T. E. Langley was called at a salary of $500.00 for 1861, second Sunday and Saturday and Sunday of fourth Sunday. He was pastor through 1868. M. B. L. Binion served a few months, with Langley returning in 1869-70. Thomas and Lavenia were still in Terrell Co.,GA in August, 1870 (US1870). He performed marriages in Terrell Co., as recorded in Marriage Books A & B, from November, 1866 to November, 1870. He resigned from Dawson Baptist Church in December, 1870.
They moved to Orange Hill, Washington Co., FL in 1870/71, where he purchased a 1200-acre plantation atop Orange Hill from his uncle, David Porter Everett, husband of Henrietta, his mother's sister.
After some time there, they moved to Greenwood, Jackson Co., FL. He was moderator of the West Florida Baptist Assn. for 18 years. In 1877, he made the motion which launched Stetson University as a Baptist affiliated school. They returned to Orange Hill in 1884, when Rev. Langley's health was failing. In 1888, they moved into Chipley, Washington Co., FL, which had been founded in 1882.
He served the First Baptist Church of Chipley for three years and also served as a circuit-riding pastor of churches in Greenwood, Orange Hill, Marianna and Campbellton.
