Hans Devauld Funderburk was born circa 1723/24 in Germany.4,1
Hans Devauld was from the Palatinate region of Germany, an historical region, now part of West Germany. It was once under the jurisdiction of the counts palatine, who in the 14th century became electors of the Holy Roman Empire. There were two parts to the region, with Hans being from the Lower, or Rhine Palatinate, which was located on both sides of the Rhine in the area south of the Main River.5 He emigrated from Leipzig, Germany, circa 1737/38 at age 14, along with his parents and siblings aboard the ship “The Golden Beaver”, which left from Hamburg. The ship was wrecked off the Carolina coast and Hans was the only survivor of the family. He was rescued and brought to Charleston SC, where he was indentured to a planter to pay his ship passage.6
