David D. Folds

M, #7110, b. 1806, d. between 1880 and 1894
David D. Folds was born in 1806 in GA.1

David D. Folds married Nancy Carden on 8 Dec 1831 in Jasper Co., GA.2

David D. Folds was a successful drawer in the 1832 Georgia Land Lottery. He was living in Jasper Co., GA. He drew land in Cherokee Co., Ninth District, First Section.3

David D. Folds served in 1836 from GA in the Creek Indian War, as a 1st Lieut.4 David D. Folds was awarded land, as follows: Warrant No. 55-120-80822, for service in the 1836 Creek Indian War.4 He was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1840 in Meriwether Co., GA.5 He was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1850 in Meriwether Co., GA, with others in the household: Nancy Carden and Elisha D. Folds.6

David D. Folds married Elizabeth Cato. David D. Folds signed the Qualified Voters list on 15 Jul 1867 in Heard Co., GA. He was in the 987 Election District.7 He was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1870 in Heard Co., GA, with others in the household: Elizabeth Cato, Amanda Folds and Missouri Folds.8 David D. Folds was enumerated as Head of Household in the census of 1880 in Randolph Co., AL, with others in the household: Elizabeth Cato, Amanda Folds, Missouri Folds, Lydia A. Folds, Mary Folds and William D. Folds.9

This is the last record of David D. Folds that I have found, so far. I have kept these two parts of David D. Folds together, even though a tombstone in Union Baptist Church Cemetery says he died in 1861. I don't know if this is one person or two different people. I was unable to find a divorce record for David and Nancy. She continues on with the children (until 1895, according to her obituary. Her tombstone says 1895).

When David and Elizabeth Cato were enumerated in 1870, he is listed as 64 years old. A reconstruction oath dated July, 1867 is in Heard Co. where he was enumerated in 1870.

In favor of one David, two wives:
•     The ages are continuous, i. e. his age at supposed death continues to increase with Elizabeth Cato.
•     I found no other David D. Folds in the age range, in Georgia or Alabama. All other David Folds have a different middle initial and none were born in the age range.
•     Missouri’s death certificate says her parents were David D. Folds and Elizabeth Cato. Missouri is enumerated in the 1930 census with Lydia Folds Sorrells, as her sister. And the death certificate for Elisha Folds says his parents were David D. Folds and Nancy Carden. Elisha is enumerated in the 1910 census with James and Lydia Folds Sorrells, as James’ brother-in-law. Elisha's age is consistant with his early ages with his mother, Nancy Carden. So Missouri and Elisha are tied together (and the two groups of children) by Lydia Folds Sorrells.
•     The obituary of Elizabeth Cato names her surviving daughters and son, plus a step-son Elisha “Dock” Folds (son of David D. Folds and Nancy Carden).

In favor of two Davids:
•     David’s tombstone in Union Baptist Church Cemetery says he died in 1861. However, it has been pointed out that the tombstone is the type furnished by the government for Confederate soldiers after 1929.
•     Nancy Carden is buried in this same cemetery.
•     His tombstone says he was a 1st Lieut. in the GA Militia, Indian Wars, and CSA, but Statements of Service say he was a Pvt. in Co. D, 8 Reg’t, Georgia Vol. Inf., and that he was discharged in 1861 by the Surgeon as having Anasarca (edema). It gives his age as 57.

David D. Folds died between 1880 and 1894 when Elizabeth was listed in the city directory as his widow.9,10
